4 Reasons To See A Dentist Before SchoolMonday, August 1st, 2016
As a parent, you know that life with kids is busy any time of the year. You also know that in just a few weeks, classes will be starting once again.
That means making time to take kids to and from school. That means making time to run one kid to practice and another to a marching band competition.
That means having to run to the store for supplies when your child informs you at the last minute about a project that is due tomorrow.
That’s one of the reasons we would encourage you to visit Advanced Smile Arts before the first day of school arrives. A checkup can give you a little peace of mind heading into the new academic year.
Here are four reasons we would love to see your family at our general dentist office in the coming weeks:
➤ Get Clean
Throughout the school year, teachers give their students tests to keep track of their progress. A routine dental examination serves a similar purpose.
During your visits, we will be looking for any potential problems, such as cavities or tooth decay. If there is a problem, we would rather deal with it now. You probably don’t want a call from your child’s school telling you that he or she has been complaining about a toothache.
Of course, preventing those problems is better than have to deal with them. That’s why your family’s visit includes a professional cleaning as well. One of our hygienists will remove any plaque or tartar buildup on your children’s teeth, and just as important, we can take some time to review the proper way to brush and floss if you would like us to do so.
After all, “homework” is an essential part of keeping your mouth healthy.
➤ Get Sealed
Speaking of prevention, you can earn a little “extra credit” while you are at our office with dental sealants.
If you’ve ever had a garden, then you may have put up a barrier to discourage pests from eating your vegetables. Sealants are like they barrier, except they are trying to keep bacteria away from your children’s most vulnerable teeth.
Dental sealants are brushed onto the chewing surface of your children’s molars (the teeth in the back of the mouth). These teeth have small indentations where bacteria be able to hide.
A sealant can stop the bacteria that cause cavities from getting into those harder to clean spaces.
If you think there is a chance that your children may not always brush their teeth as well as they should or they may eat more sweets than you would like, then sealants can serve as a second line of defense.
➤ Get Stronger
None of us are perfect. Even if we do brush and floss like we should, we may miss a spot unknowingly.
Any number of these can lead to minor damage to our teeth, damage that is so small that we don’t see it. Fortunately, there is a way to repair these tiny problems before they become full-blown cavities.
Fluoride is a mineral, and dentists learned decades ago that children who lived in places where fluoride was already in the water tended to have fewer cavities. When fluoride is applied directly to your teeth it can do two first.
First, it can repair the minor issues that we mentioned earlier. Second, it can make the enamel of your teeth stronger.
Both of those things reduce your children’s risk of developing cavities.
➤ Get Protected
Do you have any athletes in your family? If so, there is a good chance that he or she plays a high-impact sport. This certainly includes football, but it also includes sports like soccer and volleyball.
The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both recommend wearing an athletic mouthguard during any high-impact activity. Each has noted that custom-fitted athletic mouthguards, like the ones we can make for your children, are the most effective at preventing or reducing the severity of oral injuries.
Custom-fitted mouthguards also are less bulky that the boil-and-bite mouthguards available in stores. Their more compact size make them more comfortable to wear and less likely to interfere with breathing and communicating with teammates on the field or court.
You Still Have Time
The first day of the new school year will be here before you know it. Now is the time to bring your kids (and yourself) for a cleaning and examination.
