Sedation Dentistry As A First Step
You may not remember how long it’s been since you last visited a dentist, but you may have a vivid memory of why you haven’t gone back.
Dental anxiety can arise from a bad experience. It also may build slowly. If you’ve had multiple cavities, you may come to dread the sound of the drill.
You also may worry that the dentist will be critical of your oral health, or that a needle may be used to during your procedure. If you have a sensitive gag reflex, it’s understandable that dental work could give you anxiety.
Sedation dentistry can help you manage all of those concerns.
We offer two forms of dental sedation in our practice. Dr. Fuesting can help you determine which form of sedation dentistry will be best for you.
The benefits are similar for each, although there are some differences that we will discuss below.
For now, just know that sedation dentistry at Advanced Smile Arts:
▪︎ Help you feel relaxed and remain calm
▪︎ Keep you from remembering the details of your procedure
▪︎ Prevent you from feeling pain
▪︎ Prevent you from gagging
Sedation Dentistry With Nitrous Oxide
This is a fast-acting form of dental sedation. It’s also the lighter of the two forms of dental sedation that we offer at Advanced Smile Arts.
Nitrous oxide can be administered within a matter of minutes. It wears off quickly when your treatment is complete, too.
Nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas. This is partly because it creates a euphoric feeling when it is inhaled. That leads to a sense of calm and a relaxed state of mind and body.
When you are relaxed, you won’t feel any pain during your procedure. This makes cleanings and other treatments much easier for you to handle.
At the end, you will be back to feeling like yourself within a few minutes when the gas is turned off. You can return to work or home knowing that you did something that makes your mouth healthier.
Nitrous oxide is a great option for anyone with mild dental anxiety.
Oral Sedation Dentistry
Oral sedation or oral conscious sedation is stronger and longer-lasting that nitrous oxide.
At Advanced Smile Arts, this is a two-step process. Dr. Fuesting will give you medication to take the night before your appointment. We know that it can be hard to sleep when you have dental anxiety and you know you have a dental visit scheduled for the next day.
When you arrive at our office, we will provide you will additional medicine (based on your medical history) that will allow you to relax and forget about your treatment or procedure.
In fact, we’ve had patients apologize for missing their appointment because they couldn’t even recall coming to the office.
That does lead us to an important point. You must arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from our office if you are undergoing oral conscious sedation.
Dental Care Without Sedation Dentistry?
For some patients, sedation dentistry is a great way to get back into the dentist office. As they become more comfortable, some will step down from oral sedation to nitrous oxide.
Some even go so far as to come in for cleanings without sedation.
You may or may not get to that point. The main thing is that Dr. Fuesting and our staff at Advanced Smile Arts want to help you do the things that you should be doing to keep your mouth healthy for life.
