Let Us Help You Keep Your Family SmilingMonday, May 15th, 2017
We try to use our blog to share information about the many services that we offer at Advanced Smile Arts. More specifically, we want patients to know what their options are for fixing their dental problems.
But our practice isn’t just about fixing problems. Whenever possible, we want to help prevent them. That is what family dentistry is about.
If you live in or near Danville, IL, our dentist, Dr. Mike Fuesting, and our team hopes to see your family a couple times every year for professional dental cleanings and exams. While you are here, we will be happy to answer any question you have about oral care for yourself or your children.
Before Your Kid Visits The Dentist
When your child is first born, she or he probably won’t have any teeth. Even so, you should start cleaning her or his mouth from day one. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests using a moist cloth to wipe your child’s gums daily.
When the first tooth does emerge, make sure you have a baby-sized toothbrush to use. This should have soft bristles. You can apply a rice-sized bit of toothpaste to gently scrub her or his teeth before bedtime.
You will continue doing this as more teeth erupt. You can and should begin flossing (not too hard) when two teeth have come in next to one another.
As children get older, they like to show what they can do on their own. In time, one of those things will be cleaning their own teeth.
This is a good time for you to be a good role model for your daughter or son. You can start by brushing and flossing at the same time as your child. Apply a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to your toothbrush, and encourage your daughter or son to do the same with her or his toothbrush.
Then, brush your teeth for two minutes. Be sure to clean your teeth on all sides, and scrub your tongue before spitting the toothpaste in the sink and rinsing your toothbrush. Do this twice a day.
Also, show your child how to clean between his or her teeth with dental floss or another interdental cleaner such as flossers or water flossers. (Although, you may want to control a water flosser for awhile.)
Your Child’s First Visit With Us
Your child’s first professional dental cleaning is an important milestone for you and for her or him. We also understand that different children will respond in different ways to being at our dentist office in Danville, IL, for the first time.
Many children are curious about the things we use in dentistry. We find that embracing children’s curious nature will lead many to want to sit in one of our dentist chairs. If nothing else, we like to “count their teeth” even if your child isn’t ready for a dental cleaning. (Sometimes it takes a few visits for her or him to be ready.)
We also use the “show, tell, do” method with children. We find that showing them the tools and how they are used and explaining what will happen makes oral care easier for many children to handle.
We want your child’s first experience at the dentist to be a good one. We also hope this will be the first of many visits with us.
When we talk about family dentistry, we don’t just mean dental cleanings for kids. We are here to support parents as well.
We want you to visit us for your dental cleanings and exams, too. We also welcome you to ask us about things you can do at home to keep your entire family’s mouths as healthy as they can be.
We can offer advice on teething and thumb-sucking. We also provide dental sealants and fluoride treatments, which can help your efforts to prevent cavities. Think of these as added protection for those days when your kids don’t brush and floss as well as they should.
And if you have any little athletes in your family, we can design custom-fitted athletic mouthguards as another part of our general dentistry.
