Your Family Deserves Quality Dental CareMonday, April 18th, 2016
You love your family, and you do your best to keep them as healthy as possible.
This includes their oral health, which is why you encourage your children to brush their teeth every evening before they go to bed.
It’s also why we welcome you and your family to receive dental care at our office, Advanced Smile Arts, in Danville, IL. Family dentistry is an important part of our general dental practice.
Our team is here to support you and to encourage your efforts to keep your children’s mouth free of cavities.
We know that parenting takes a lot of energy and effort. Children don’t always understand why you want them to do things, and they may resist doing things that are for their own good.
As much as our staff is here to care for you children’s oral health, we also are here to support your efforts at home.
Let’s say your son or daughter is having difficulty teething. We can be a resource for you. We can answer questions and determine if your child may be having issues when his or her teeth are emerging.
Thumb sucking is another common concern. It’s a habit that can lead to long-term problems if allowed to continue for an extended period of time.
We can show you the potential issues that can develop as a result of thumb sucking, and we may be able to show you some ways to encourage your child to break this habit.
Reducing Dental Anxiety
Dental anxiety affects millions of people across the United States. In many cases, this anxiety may have started at an early age.
We do everything that we can to reduce your child’s anxiety, starting with his or her first visit to our office.
We want this to be a good experience, and we try to make it as fun as possible for your child. We know children are naturally curious, so we try to answer questions they have about what we do in our office.
As your child becomes more comfortable, we may suggest that he or she sits in our special chair so we can take a look at or count his or her teeth.
Before we attempt any procedure, we use the “show, tell, do” approach. First, we do our best to show you and your child what needs to be done. Then, we will tell you how it will be done. Finally, we do the procedure.
We want your child to understand what is happening every step of the way.
For children who may feel nervous about coming to the dentist, we can provide toys and blankets to help them feel more comfortable.
We do offer sedation dentistry as well. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a safe and effective way for children and adults to remain relaxed and comfortable during a routine cleaning or other procedure.
We certainly hope that we get to see you and your family a couple times every year for cleanings and examinations.
We want to monitor changes in your children’s teeth, and we will be on the lookout for cavities or other problems.
But it’s just as important for you and your kids to develop good habits at home. This is why we encourage you to follow the American Dental Association’s recommendations regarding daily oral hygiene.
You and your children should brush your teeth twice each day. You should you a pea-sized dab of toothpaste with fluoride. You each need a soft-bristled toothbrush, and you should scrub your teeth on all sides for two minutes twice each day.
This will remove a lot of the bacteria and plaque that can cause cavities and other problems.
But you and your children also need to clean between your teeth and under your gums. To do that, you need to floss your teeth once per day. Flossing cleans the areas that you can’t reach with your toothbrush.
Doing these things every day and visiting our office at least twice a year for checkups will greatly reduce your family’s risk of tooth decay.
